Is it important for industrial companies to treat industrial wastewater?

Industrial companies are increasingly facing problems with the management and disposal of contaminated water. Industrial wastewater is typically quite contaminated and characterized by high concentrations of suspended solids, organic and chemical pollutants (BOD/COD), total nitrogen and phosphorus (TN/TP), heavy metals, and various other environmentally hazardous chemical substances.

In practically all cases, industrial wastewater cannot be discharged directly into municipal sewage networks or biological treatment plants without preliminary treatment.

Typically, primary physical-chemical wastewater treatment is applied to industrial wastewater. Primary wastewater treatment is carried out by flotation, filtration, or sedimentation, most often using special chemical reagents, which in each case must be selected by determining their types and effective doses.

  • Primary physical-chemical wastewater treatment is a wastewater treatment stage (method) during which coarse pollutants, suspended solids, and fine colloidal particles are removed from wastewater.
  • Primary wastewater treatment typically involves natural sedimentation of suspended solids, separation, flotation (wastewater treatment with a flotator), mechanical separation, and the use of chemical reagents to improve the separation of water impurities (in the form of sludge) from water.
  • Dissolved pollutants in wastewater are removed in biological wastewater treatment plants.

During primary wastewater treatment, only pollutants in the form of suspended solids and metals are separated from wastewater, while dissolved pollutants in wastewater remain unremoved. Together with suspended solids, wastewater pollution is correspondingly reduced according to other parameters—BOD, COD, fats, partially phosphorus, nitrogen, respectively only to the extent that the values of these parameters constitute suspended solids. Pollutants in dissolved form must be removed from wastewater in biological treatment plants.
